NEW DELHI – Automobile retail sales in November grew only 2% on year to 3.3 million units due to a contraction in two-wheeler sales, data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association showed Monday. However, the sales lost momentum after a robust festival season, as retail sales fell 18% on monthly basis from 4 million units in October. Even as the sales moderated, FADA said walk-ins at dealerships remained strong, alongside healthy enquiry pipelines.

"November'25 defied the conventional post-festive slowdown, delivering a resilient performance despite an unusually high comparative base," said the automobile federation's President C.S. Vigneshwar in a press release. "Traditionally, auto retail eases in the month following the festival cycle; however, this year, most festive registrations were completed in October'25 itself, unlike November'24, when Deepawali and Dhanteras fell in towards the end of October'24, and vehicle registrations happened in November'24 which lifted volumes significantly," he said.

Two-wheelers, which form the biggest bulk of automobiles sold in India, saw retail sales dip 3% on year and 19% on month to 2.55 million units as the segment suffered from supply constraints. "A significant retail shift occurred due to festive buying in October, combined with delayed crop payments and uneven supply of preferred models," Vigneshwar said.

Dealers sold 394,152 passenger vehicles in November, up nearly 20% on year but down almost 29% on month. Inventory levels of this segment fell to 44-46 days from 53-55 days earlier, FADA said.

Retail sales of three-wheelers grew 24% on year and 3% on month to 133,951 units in November, driven by a strong growth in sales of electric passenger and goods rickshaws. All sub-segments of three-wheelers managed to report a double-digit year-on-year growth in retail sales.

Commercial vehicle sales grew 20% on year but fell 15% on month to 94,935 units in November. The year-on-year sales growth was supported by a robust demand for light and heavy commercial vehicles. Sales of this segment grew as infrastructure activities, freight movement, and tourism mobility picked up, FADA said. However, fleet utilisation remains uneven in select markets.

Dealerships shipped 126,033 tractors in November, registering a 57% year-on-year and 71% month-over-month growth.

OUTLOOK

Going forward, FADA has adopted an outlook of "cautious optimism". "(this is) a phase where the sector consolidates gains from the GST-led affordability shift and two strong months of retail performance, while remaining watchful of calendar-year dynamics and supply alignment. Nearly 64% of the dealers surveyed by FADA expect a growth in December while around 30% of them expect sales to remain flat.

Retail automobile sales over the next three months is expected to be positive, supported by sustained momentum from GST 2.0 tax rationalisation, strong enquiry pipelines, and improving rural economic indicators. Nearly 74% of the dealers surveyed by FADA expect sales to grow in the coming three months. "Expected price increases in January, new model launches for 2026, and marriage season demand are set to drive conversions, while crop realisation liquidity is expected to reinforce retail traction across Bharat," FADA said.

Between April and November, dealers sold 19.72 million automobiles, up just over 9% on year. Almost all segments have reported a growth in this financial year so far, barring construction equipment, sales of which fell 11% on year to 44,424 units.   End
