MUMBAI - Interglobe Aviation-operated IndiGo further brought down the number of flight cancellations and likely operated over 1,650 flights Sunday, more than 1,500 flights Saturday and 1,000 flights Friday. On Sunday, the airline's on-time performance was 75% as compared with 30% on Saturday, the company said in an exchange filing.

IndiGo saw an unprecedented level of flight cancellations last week due to crew shortage following enforcement of the new flight duty time limitation rules. These flight cancellations led to several passengers being stranded at airports across the country.

Interglobe Aviation Sunday said its board had met on the first day when the problem of cancellations and delayed flights arose. The board then decided to set up a crisis management group that included Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta, Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers, and directors Gregg Saretsky, Mike Whitaker, and Amitabh Kant. "This group has been meeting regularly to monitor the situation and is being constantly updated by the management of the measures being undertaken to restore normal operations," Interglobe Aviation said in a filing.

However, considering the high number of cancellations and inconvenience caused to customers, aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation Saturday issued show cause notices to Elbers and Chief Operating Officer Isidre Porqueras. Media reports said the DGCA has now given a 24-hour extension to the CEO and COO to submit their responses to notices.

Elbers and Porqueras sought time till 1800 IST, Monday, to submit their responses, according to a report by the Indian Express. The DGCA iterated that it will proceed ex-parte if Elbers and Porqueras failed to submit their responses.

For the September quarter, InterGlobe Aviation reported a net loss of INR 26.14 billion on a revenue of INR 185.55 billion. On Friday, shares of the company ended over 1% lower at INR 5,370.50 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
