MUMBAI – The Ministry of Civil Aviation has capped the airfares and directed all airlines to follow the prescribed fares, according to a post on the social media platform 'X'. The government action came after a surge in airfares following the disruptions in IndiGo's flight operations.

 

The government has capped the maximum fare of up to 500 kilometres at INR 7,500 and the maximum fare between 500 kilometres and 1,000 kilometres at INR 12,000. The fare at stage length of 1,000 kilometres-1,500 kilometres at INR 15,000 and it is INR 18,000 for stage length above 1,500 kilometres, as per an order issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

 

"The fares limits are applicable for travel until the fares stabilise or till further review," the order said. The new capped fares are to come into force with immediate effect.           

 

Earlier in the day, the ministry directed airlines to adhere to prescribed fare caps to protect passengers from opportunistic pricing. This comes amid thousands of flight cancellations by IndiGo and shortages of pilots and crew following the enforcement of new flight duty time limitation rules. This led to disruption in operations and stranded passengers at the national airports, causing a chaotic situation.  End
