MUMBAI – InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. operated IndiGo is expected to have flight cancellations below 1,000 on Saturday, said Pieter Elbers, chief executive officer of the airline. The return to a complete normal situation will take time, which is likely between Dec. 10 and Dec. 15, due to the size, scale, and complexity of IndiGo's operations, he said in a video posted on the social media platform X.

The company had initiated a reboot of all its systems and schedules Friday, which resulted in the highest number of cancellations so far. This was an essential step for progressive improvement, Elbers said. Since the crisis, the company saw a severe impact on Friday, with the number of cancellations going to over 1,000 or more than half its daily flights, he added.

The support from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation by providing relief for the implementation of Flight Duty Time Limitations was of great help to the company. "Still, there is a lot of work in progress, but going forward from here, in alignment with Ministry of Civil Aviation and DGCA, we expect to further improve every day," Elbers said.

IndiGo has been initiating flight cancellations due to a mounting pilot shortage that disrupted its operations following enforcement of the new flight duty time limitation rules. Passengers were stranded at the national airports due to the disruptions, which led to a chaotic situation. Elbers extended his apology for the inconvenience that has caused customers on account of delays or cancellations.

The company has taken measures to address customer issues. The company has sent detailed communication through social media communication on refunds and directed customers whose flights are cancelled not to come to the airports, Elbers said.

For the September quarter, the parent company InterGlobe Aviation reported a net loss of INR 26.14 billion on a revenue of INR 185.55 billion. On Friday, shares of the company ended over 1% lower at INR 5,370.50 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
