MUMBAI – The Nifty Bank index is expected to rise next week after the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee Friday lowered the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.25%, analysts said. The RBI also said it will infuse durable liquidity in December by buying bonds worth INR 1 trillion through open market operation auctions and hold a $5-billion dollar-rupee buy-sell swap auction.

"For Bank Nifty, the higher bottom support is placed near 59,000. Above 59,000, it could rally up to 60,200. Further upside potential may also lift the index up to 60,500. However, if it falls below 59,000, the uptrend would become vulnerable," Amol Athawale, vice president-technical research at Kotak Securities, said. The index remained flat this week, settling at 59777.20 on Friday, having risen to an all-time high of 60117.30 points on Monday. IndusInd Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the biggest gainers this week, both rising 1.4% from a week ago, while Punjab National Bank fell 2.2%.

Vatsal Bhuva, technical analyst at LKP Securities, said Bank Nifty on Friday formed a "long bullish candlestick, successfully reclaiming its 10-day SMA (simple moving average) and reinforcing the ongoing positive momentum". "Overall, the technical setup indicates that the prevailing uptrend remains intact in the Bank Nifty index. On the higher side, resistance is placed near the 60,000 level, while immediate support is identified around the 59,250 mark, keeping the index well-positioned within a defined trading range," Bhuva said.
