MUMBAI – The gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies grew 24.2% on year to INR 268.97 billion in November, according to data released by the General Insurance Council Friday. In October, the premium income was INR 296.18 billion.
General insurance companies saw a 22.4% on year rise in gross premiums in November at INR 224.19 billion. The gross direct premium of standalone health insurance companies was INR 37.09 billion in November, up 36.1% on year.
The New India Assurance Co. Ltd.--the largest non-life insurer by market share--reported a 10.8% on-year rise in gross direct premium to INR 27.81 billion in November. The public sector insurer's market share rose to 12.83% in November from 12.24% a year ago. The market share was lower than the 13.18% in October.
Gross direct premium underwritten by Bajaj General Insurance Ltd. nearly tripled on year to INR 39.99 billion in November. ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. reported a premium income of INR 21.87 billion for the last month, up 7.4% on year.
Among standalone health insurance companies, Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium underwritten rose 47.1% on year to INR 7.38 billion in November and Star Health & Allied Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium underwritten grew 19.6% on year to INR 14.60 billion in the reporting month.
For Apr-Nov, the gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies was up 8.0% on year at INR 2.22 trillion, data showed.
