MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country fell 1.6% from the previous week to 158.624 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 86.4% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 7.3% from a year ago and nearly 22.4% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 16.311 billion cubic metre, which is over 82% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was nearly 56% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 17.118 billion cubic metres, nearly 79% of the total live storage capacity and higher than over 72% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 35.967 billion cubic metres. This was over 94% of the total live storage capacity, against over 91% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa. Thus, storage during current year is better than the storage of last year and is also better than the normal storage during the corresponding period, according to the report.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 42.820 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This was slightly over 88% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 83% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 46.408 billion cubic metre, nearly 84% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was nearly 83% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 160 reported more than 80% of normal storage and six 80% or below of normal storage. Of these six, none had storage below 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 3.3 millimetres of rainfall, 21% below the normal of 4.2 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
