MUMBAI – A trough associated with a well-marked low-pressure system stretching from north Tamil Nadu to south interior Karnataka and north Kerala is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu Thursday and Friday, the India Meteorological Department said Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Kerala and parts of south interior Karnataka till Thursday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely over large parts of south peninsular India over the next two days, it said.
The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining the west-central Bay, north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area in the early hours of Wednesday. It now lies over north Tamil Nadu, the Puducherry coast, and the neighbouring areas. The system is likely to move westwards slowly and weaken further into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours, the weather bureau said.
According to the weather agency, no significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over most parts of northwest India in the next five days. However, Uttar Pradesh is likely to see a gradual fall of 2–3 degrees Celsius over the next three days. In central and east India, minimum temperatures are also likely to fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius over the next three days before stabilising. In northeast India, no major change is expected for the next two days, followed by a fall of 2–3 degrees Celsius over the subsequent three days.
Cold wave conditions are very likely in pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh Thursday and Friday. Similar conditions are expected over north Rajasthan from Thursday to Saturday and over Jharkhand during the weekend. Dense fog is very likely during early morning hours in pockets of Assam, Meghalaya, and Odisha Thursday and Friday. It is also expected over Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, and Himachal Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday, the weather office said. End
