NEW DELHI – The government may conduct an economic census in 2027, after the home ministry completes the population census, Statistics Secretary Saurabh Garg said Wednesday. This suggests a further delay from the statistics ministry's already pushed timeline of 2026 for the economic census.
The economic census was initially slated for 2025 but was postponed to 2026 after the statistics ministry failed to secure approval from the finance ministry's Department of Expenditure by March.
Garg said it would be more appropriate to hold an economic census after the population census in 2027. "There is the suggestion of having harmonised data of businesses. This is akin to what has been discussed about having a statistical business register," Garg said at the Confederation of Indian Industry's IndiaEdge 2025.
The statistics ministry is designated to undertake the economic census every three years to provide a detailed and comprehensive database of all establishments in the country, whether in the public or private sector, organised or unorganised sector. But as the seventh economic census was scrapped due to quality concerns, the upcoming eighth round will be held over 12 years since the sixth economic census was conducted in 2013. End
