NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. aims to enter the electric vehicle segment "with full readiness," Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hisashi Takeuchi said at the launch of its first all-electric sport utility vehicle e VITARA in India Tuesday. India's top car-maker aims to establish 100,000 electric vehicle charging points by 2030.
Maruti Suzuki has so far established 2,000-plus EV charging points at its dealerships across 1,100-plus cities. The company is partnering with 13 charging point operators to serve customers in India.
Bookings for e VITARA are yet to open in India and sales will start in 2026, the company management said. The auto-maker has already launched the made-in-India electric SUV in select international markets. The company did not disclose the price of the e VITARA at the event.
"We have invested about INR 250 crores (INR 2.5 billion) towards establishing the charging infrastructure across our dealer network and creating the app," said Takeuchi, adding that there are over 1,500 EV-ready workshops for service support. Maruti Suzuki is also preparing an EV-ready workforce of 150,000.
"Aligning with our parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation's vision, we will be launching many more electric vehicles across body types and segments in the coming years," Takeuchi said.
The Maruti Suzuki network ensures there is a charging station available every 5–10 km on average in the top-100 Indian cities in EV penetration, said Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer-marketing & sales at Maruti Suzuki India.
The latest SUV offering has secured a 5-star safety rating in the Bharat New Car Safety Assessment program tests. It offers a range of 543 km on full charge. "We are providing seven air bags as a standard in all variants of this vehicle," Takeuchi said.
For the September quarter, Maruti Suzuki had reported a net profit of INR 32.93 billion on revenue of INR 421.01 billion. On Tuesday, shares of the company closed nearly 1% higher on the National Stock Exchange at INR 16,239. End
