NEW DELHI – The government has approved the upgradation of Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. to Navratna status. In a post on microblogging site X, Department of Public Enterprises said Numaligarh Refinery will be the 27th Navratna among the public sector units.

The government categorises its public sector undertakings as Maharatna, Navratna, and Miniratna based on criteria that range from financial strength to systemic importance. The government introduced the Navratna concept in 1997 to identify and support public sector companies with competitive advantages so that they become global companies. The system enables the board of central public sector enterprises' powers related to capital expenditure, joint ventures, and human resource management.

Numaligarh Refinery is a joint venture between Oil India, the Assam government, and Engineers India Ltd. The company is primarily engaged in the business of refining petroleum products.

Numaligarh Refinery comes under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas with an annual turnover of INR 251.47 billion and net profit of INR 16.08 billion for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar).  End
