NEW DELHI – Mills in India produced 4.11 million tonnes of sugar as of Sunday in the sugar season started October, up nearly 43% from 2.88 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association said in a release. Sugar output rose sharply as sugarcane crushing increased in major sugarcane-producing regions, especially in Maharashtra.
"Sugarcane throughput outperforms seasonal trend" and higher sugarcane crushing volumes "signal a robust start" to the 2025-26 (Oct-Sep) sugar year, ISMA said. With the availability of more sugarcane, the number of mills operational as of Sunday rose to 428 units against 376 last year.
"Field-level feedback points to healthier cane yields and better sugar recovery rates across key states versus last year," ISMA said. Amid these positive developments, ISMA has forecast India's sugar output in 2025-26 at 30.95 million tonnes, up from around 26.2 million tonnes last year.
Meanwhile, ISMA said sugar production in Maharashtra as of Sunday has "outperformed" and surged over 268% on year to 1.7 million tonnes, up from 460,000 tonnes last year. The state had 170 mills running as of Sunday, compared to 124 mills last year, it added.
In Uttar Pradesh, sugar production as of Sunday was 1.4 million tonnes, up from nearly 1.3 million tonnes last year. The state has 117 mills operational against 118 last year, ISMA said.
However, sugar production in Karnataka fell nearly 5% to 774,000 tonnes from 812,000 tonnes last year. As of Sunday, 75 mills were running against 71 units last year. However, ISMA said sugar production in Karnataka has "caught pace despite early disruptions due to farmers' agitations."
To improve the financial health of mills, ISMA reiterated its demand for a hike in the minimum selling price of sugar to INR 41 per kg from INR 31 per kg. "With the recent increase of cane cost in UP, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand, the pan-India average cost of production has gone up to INR 41.72/kg. An increased MSP (minimum selling price)is essential to ensure fair returns to mills and timely payment to farmers," ISMA said.
Citing the lower ethanol supply orders allocated to sugar-based distilleries, ISMA also asked the government to ensure more ethanol orders from oil marketing companies in the upcoming tenders and revise the rates of ethanol produced from sugarcane-based feedstock. End
