MUMBAI – Coal stocks at thermal plants rose to 53.7 million tonnes at the end of November, up over 34% on year, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority. Coal stocks were at 86% of the normative level of 62.4 million tonnes, versus the 67% recorded in the same period of last year, it said in the report.

Of the 188 thermal power plants with a total generation capacity of nearly 219 gigawatts, 13 were reported to have a critical stock level. Of these, five were domestic coal-based plants, while six were imported coal-based plants, the data showed. Last year, 28 plants were reported to have a critical stock level. Domestic coal plants, which include pithhead and non-pithhead, with a total capacity of 200.2 gigawatts, had 86% of the normative coal stock at 50.5 million tonnes. The normative level of stocks required for these plants is 58.1 million tonnes, it said.

A pithead power plant is built at the location of a coal mine to minimise transportation costs, while a non-pithead plant is situated away from the mines and relies on long-distance transport to get its supplies.

As of Nov. 30, the total coal stocks with the 17 imported coal-based plants were at 3.2 million tonnes, which is 74% of the normative coal stock levels of 4.2 million tonnes, the data showed. These plants have a total generation capacity of 18.7 gigawatts.  End
