NEW DELHI – The area sown under rabi crops across India touched 39.3 million hectares as of Friday, up nearly 10% from about 35.8 million hectares sown last year, a release from the agriculture ministry on Monday showed. The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, stood at 18.74 million hectares, up nearly 17% from 16.03 million hectares in the corresponding period last year. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.
Acreage under paddy was 910,000 hectares, an increase of nearly 7.7% from 850,000 hectares last year.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, rose about 9.3% on year to 2.9 million hectares so far, from 2.7 million hectares a year ago. Within this category, jowar acreage increased about 4% to 1.5 million hectares from 1.4 million hectares, while maize was up over 20% at 876,000 hectares compared with 725,000 hectares last year. Ragi acreage rose 5.7% to 56,000 hectares from 53,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all pulses in the country so far in the 2025–26 season was 8.7 million hectares, up about 2.3% from 8.5 million hectares last year. Among key pulses, chana acreage rose almost 4% to 6.2 million hectares from 6.0 million hectares, while that of masur increased over 9% to 1.1 million hectares from 1.0 million hectares. Acreage under urad was unchanged at 141,000 hectares, while moong increased about 14% to 16,000 hectares from 14,000 hectares last year.
The total area under all oilseeds was 8.1 million hectares, up 4% from 7.7 million hectares last year. Groundnut acreage declined sharply by about 30% to 135,000 hectares from 194,000 hectares, while mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose about 6% to 7.7 million hectares from 7.3 million hectares. Sunflower acreage increased about 10.5% to 21,000 hectares from 19,000 hectares, while linseed declined to 115,000 hectares from 179,000 hectares a year ago.
