MUMBAI – Cyclonic storm 'Ditwah' is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu till Monday, with spells of extremely heavy rainfall expected over a few parts of the state till Sunday, the India Meteological Department said. The storm is also likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema till Tuesday, with extremely heavy showers likely over some parts of the region on Sunday, the department said.

The department has issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu till Sunday, and for Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on Sunday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The cyclonic storm lying over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining northern Sri Lanka moved north-northwestwards in the early hours of Saturday. Currently, it lies about 140 kilometres from Vedaranniyam in Tamil Nadu, 170 km from Karaikal, and 280 km from Puducherry. It is likely to continue moving in the same direction, with its centre moving closer to the Tamil Nadu coastline. It is likely to be 25 kilometre away from the Tamil Nadu coast in the early hours of Sunday, the weather department said.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely over most parts of south India till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. With the cyclonic storm drawing nearer, the bureau has warned fishermen from venturing off the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh coasts.

In northwest India, the minimum temperature is expected to fall by 2–4 degrees Celsius in the next three days, the weather department said. In east and northeast India, no significant change in minimum temperatures is likely in the next three days, after which a fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen, the department said. No major change in minimum temperatures is expected in Maharashtra in the next 24 hours, after which these could rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next four days.

In Gujarat, no major change in minimum temperature is expected in the next 24 hours, but they are likely to fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, the department said. No major change in minimum temperature is likely over central India for the week, it said.

Dense fog conditions are expected to prevail in the early morning hours in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh from Sunday to Tuesday and over Odisha on Sunday. Cold wave conditions are likely over parts of Punjab from Sunday to Tuesday and over Odisha on Sunday, the weather bureau said.  End
