MUMBAI – The government has reduced the base import prices of palm oils in the range of $3-$22 per tonne, while it has raised the base import price for crude soyoil by $14 per tonne, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a notification Friday. The base import prices of palmolein oils are unchanged. The revised rates came into effect Saturday.

The Centre levies import duty ad valorem and reviews base import prices, depending on changes in global prices and foreign exchange rates. The government normally revises base import prices of edible oils every fortnight and these are used to calculate the duty on these commodities being brought into the country. The base import prices of edible oils were last revised on Nov. 14.

The base import price of crude palm oil has been cut by $22 per tonne and that of refined, bleached, and deodorised palm oil has been reduced by $3 per tonne. The government has kept the base import price of crude palmolein oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil unchanged. It has raised the price of crude soyoil by $14 per tonne.

India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for the bulk of the country's imports, with most of it purchased from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, which are top producers of the commodity.

The following table details the base import prices of edible oils compared with the previous levels, in dollars per tonne, and the revision in absolute terms in dollars:
