NEW DELHI – The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet Friday approved the appointment of Vivek Chaturvedi as the new chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. Chaturvedi was serving as a member of the board prior to his appointment as chairman.

Chaturvedi's appointment follows the superannuation of former chairman Sanjay Agarwal on the same day. Agarwal was appointed the CBIC chairman in August 2023.

Chaturvedi is a Indian Revenue Service officer of the 1990 batch. Before becoming a member on the apex indirect taxes board, Chaturvedi served as the principal director general of vigilance and chief vigilance officer in CBIC. He had succeeded Vivek Ranjan, member (tax policy and legal), CBIC, who had completed his tenure on Aug. 31 this year.

As the CBIC chairman, Chaturvedi will be a key official behind the Budget-making process for the upcoming Budget for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). He is also joining the department at a sensitive time when he has to work on ways to ensure revenue buoyancy despite the goods and services tax rate changes announced in September.  End
