NEW DELHI – Indian telecommunications operators net added 1.43 million mobile users in October, down from the 3.41 million net added in September, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Friday. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. led the show in October, followed by Bharti Airtel Ltd., and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. continued to lose subscribers last month.
Reliance Jio net added nearly 2 million mobile users in October, lower than the 3.25 million onboarded in September. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel net added 1.25 million users in October, nearly three times the 437,717 users added in the preceeding month.
State-owned BSNL expanded its mobile customer base with 269,215 new users in the last month. In September, the telecom operator net added 524,014 mobile users. On the other hand, debt-ridden Vodafone Idea net lost 2.08 million mobile users in October, much higher than the 744,222 customers net lost in September. MTNL's mobile subscriber base contracted by 2,229 users in October. In September, the public sector company lost 56,928 users.
At the end of October, India's total mobile user base was 1.17 billion users. Within this, private-sector players Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea comprised 92.08% market share while state-owned BSNL and MTNL held 7.92% share. The overall mobile tele-density in India increased slightly to 82.57% at the end of October from 82.53% a month ago.
According to data from the regulatory body, 15.05 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability in October.
