MUMBAI – Under the influence of the cyclonic storm 'Ditwah', extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of coastal Tamil Nadu till Sunday, and over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said, issuing a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast moved north-northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm, named 'Ditwah', in the first half of Thursday. It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards across coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and reach the southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu and the adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early hours of Sunday, the weather department said.

The cyclonic storm is also likely to cause heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu till Monday and heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema from Saturday to Monday. Heavy rainfall is expected over Kerala till Saturday, over south interior Karnataka during the weekend and Telangana Sunday, the weather agency said.

The remnants of cyclonic storm 'Senyar' over the Strait of Malacca weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area in the second half of Thursday and moved away from the region in the early hours Friday, the department said.

The weather bureau said no major change in minimum temperatures is expected over northwest India for the next 48 hours, followed by a gradual fall of 2–4 degrees Celsius. In central India, no major changes are expected during the same period but after which they are likely to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius.

No major change in minimum temperatures for the next four days is likely over east India, after which a fall of 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected, the weather bureau said. In Maharashtra, they are expected to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days. No significant change in minimum temperatures for 48 hours is likely in Gujarat, followed by a rise of 3–4 degrees Celsius likely. No significant change in the minimum temperature is likely over northeast India during the next five days, the bureau added.  End
