NEW DELHI – India and Canada will begin negotiations for the proposed free trade agreement next week, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Friday. The two nations agreed to resume trade talks just this week and also finalised the terms of reference for the deal.
The negotiations between India and Canada had halted in September 2023 after the bilateral relations suffered a major setback when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that the Indian government had a hand in the assassination of Nijjar, a Canada-based Khalistan separatist whom New Delhi designated as a terrorist. While India rejected the charges as absurd and motivated, the Canadian authorities arrested four Indian nationals in connection with the murder of Nijjar.
Even as trade negotiations were on a pause, usual trade continued between the two countries. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India's trade with Canada totalled $8.7 billion, with exports worth $4.2 billion. End
