MUMBAI – India's headline indices closed with marginal gains, as the record highs hit intra-day could not be sustained, with investors likely booking profits and unwinding their long positions. The indices, which touched an all-time high during the day after nearly 14 months of consolidation, were choppy in the second half of the session, analysts said.

While near-term optimism is underpinned by rate cut expectations from the Reserve Bank of India and the US Federal Reserve in December, the long-term narrative is based on an earnings rebound in Oct-Mar, analysts said. Likely return of foreign investors to Indian equities also boosted the sentiment, though the rupee at a near-record low is a concern, they said.

The recent rally has been reinforced by expectations of rate cuts in India and the US, which is positive for interest-rate-sensitive sectors and could trigger foreign inflows, Ajay Menon, managing director – wealth management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said in a note. "Alongside this, early signs of an earnings recovery from Q3 (Oct-Dec)- supported by GST rationalisation and improving rural demand - are improving confidence in the earnings cycle," he added.

The Nifty 50, which rose to a record high of 26310.45 points during the session, closed at 26215.55 points, up 10.25 points. The BSE Sensex closed at 85720.38 points, up 110.87 points or 0.1%. The 30-stock index rose to a lifetime high of 86055.86 points.

Broader market indices ended mixed, with mid-cap indices faring better. Two mid-cap indices – Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap 100 — hit their lifetime highs earlier in the session, but closed with marginal gains. However, the small-cap indices were under selling pressure throughout the session. The small-cap indices are currently 8-10% away from their record highs.

During the session, Shriram Finance and Larsen & Toubro hit record highs among the Nifty 50 stocks. Shriram Finance rose to a high of INR 869.50 and closed 1.3% higher at INR 867.65. L&T rose to a lifetime high of INR 4,140 but came off highs and closed at INR 4,081.30. State Bank of India, SBI Life Insurance Co., Eicher Motors, Bharti Airtel, and Titan Co. were also close to their record highs.

Meanwhile, HDFC Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, and Maruti Suzuki India are 1-4% away from their lifetime highs. Among other Nifty 50 stocks, 13 are 5-10?low their lifetime high, six are 11-14% lower, and eight are 22-29?low their record highs. Others, such as Power Grid Corp. of India, NTPC, Oil and Natural Gas Corp., Bajaj Auto, Coal India, Wipro, and Tata Consultancy Services, are trading 34-48% lower than their record highs. Adani Enterprises is 80% lower than its record price of INR 4,062.14. Trent and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles are trading at half their record highs.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Media gained the most, closing 0.8% higher. Indices tied to rate-sensitive sectors, such as financial services, banks, and fast-moving consumer goods, closed higher. However, Nifty Auto, which rose in early trade, closed lower. Nifty Private Bank, Nifty Infrastructure, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Auto hit all-time highs during the session.

Electric vehicle manufacturers such as Ather Energy and Ola Electric Mobility ended the session around 2-3% higher after the Union Cabinet approved INR 72.80 billion for a scheme to manufacture rare-earth magnets in India. Other automobile companies came under selling pressure, with Eicher Motors, Maruti Suzuki India, and Bajaj Auto closed 1-3% lower. However, Ashok Leyland ended over 7% higher.
