MUMBAI – Under the influence of a deep depression, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday and Saturday, and over parts of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said, while issuing a red alert for these regions. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast intensified into a deep depression in the early hours of Thursday, the weather department said. It is very likely to move nearly north-northwestwards across the Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next few hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards across the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the subsequent 48 hours, the department said.

Under the influence of this weather system, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over Tamil Nadu till Sunday, over Rayalaseema from Friday to Monday, and over coastal Andhra Pradesh from Friday to Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala till Saturday, over Telangana on Sunday and Monday, and over south interior Karnataka on Saturday, the weather department said.

Wednesday's cyclonic storm "Senyar" over the Malacca Strait and adjoining northeast Indonesia weakened into a deep depression in the early hours of Thursday and is very likely to move nearly eastwards and weaken further into a depression in the latter half of the day.

A gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected for the next two days over northwest India and thereafter, a fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely, the weather bureau said. In central India, a gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely during the same period, after which no major change is expected.

In east India, minimum temperatures are likely to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days and no major change is seen thereafter. No major change in the minimum temperature is likely over west India for the next 24 hours and a gradual fall by 2–3 degrees Celcius is expected in the subsequent four days. No significant change in the minimum temperature is likely in northeast India during the next five days, the weather department said.  End
