India receives 23% below normal rainfall at 4.1 mm in week to Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 4.1 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 23% below the normal of 5.3 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 26, the country received 127.7 millimetres of rainfall, 25% above the normal of 102.3 millimetres, the data showed.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, three received below-normal rainfall while one recorded above-normal showers, according to the data. In south peninsular India, rainfall was 26% above normal at 20 millimetres. The presence of multiple weather systems, including the intensification of two low pressure areas consecutively and the formation of the cyclonic storm Senyar brought heavy to very heavy rainfall to the region during the week.
In east and northeast India, rainfall was 77% below normal at 0.8 millimetres, the data showed. Both northwest and central India received 99% below normal rainfall in the week ended Wednesday due to the absence of weather systems over the regions.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, 21 did not receive any rainfall, while it was "large deficient" in seven, "deficient" in two, "normal" in one, "excess" in three, and "large" excess in two. End
