NEW DELHI - Wheat sales under the Food Corp. of India's open market sales scheme for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) remained subdued on Wednesday amid weak demand and ample market supplies. FCI sold only 80,000 tonnes, or 40% of the 200,000 tonnes offered, an FCI official said. 

 

Though sales improved marginally from 72,856 tonnes in the last auction on Nov. 12, these remained substantially weak. This contrasts sharply with last year, when auctions began in December and millers and processors had picked up almost the entire quantity offered in most rounds.

 

Amid weak buying interest this year, FCI has slowed its wheat auction schedule to once a fortnight instead of weekly. The government has allocated 3 million tonnes of wheat to be sold under the scheme in FY26.

In Wednesday's auction, demand varied across states. In Punjab, FCI offered 25,000 tonnes and sold 22,000 tonnes. In Assam, the corporation sold only 14,000 tonnes of the 25,000 tonnes offered. 

 

Haryana saw the strongest response with the entire 10,000 tonnes offered being purchased. Given the firm demand in Haryana, FCI is likely to offer more quantities for the state in the coming auctions, the official said.  End
