NEW DELHI – India's kharif food grain output for the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at a record 173.3 million tonnes, largely because of record production of rice and maize, according to the first advance estimates released by the government Wednesday. This is 5.2% higher than the first advance estimate of 164.7 million tonnes last year and also higher than the final kharif foodgrain output of 169.4 million tonnes in 2024-25.

Kharif rice output is estimated at a record 124.5 million tonnes, up by 3.8% from 119.9 million tonnes in last year's first advance estimate, and also higher than the final kharif rice output of 122.8 million tonnes in 2024-25. Kharif maize production in 2025-26 is pegged at a record 28.3 million tonnes, up 15.5% from the estimate of 24.5 million tonnes a year ago. The final kharif maize output in 2024-25 was 24.8 million tonnes.

"Excessive rainfall in some areas of the country affected crops, but most areas have benefited greatly from the good monsoon, which has led to overall good growth of crops," Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said in a release.

The production of coarse cereal during the 2025-26 kharif season is pegged at 41.4 million tonnes, up from 37.8 million tonnes in last year's first advance estimate. Coarse cereals include jowar, bajra, ragi, and millets.

Total kharif pulses output is pegged at 7.41 million tonnes, higher than 6.95 million tonnes a year ago. Tur production is seen rising 2.8% on year to 3.6 million tonnes, and moong production is seen rising over 21% to 1.7 million tonnes. Output of urad is pegged at 1.2 million tonnes, largely unchanged from last year's first advance estimate.

India's kharif oilseed output is pegged at 27.6 million tonnes, up from 25.7 million tonnes in last year's first advance estimate. Production of soybean and groundnut is seen rising nearly 7% on year to 14.3 million tonnes and 11.1 million tonnes, respectively.

The government has pegged sugarcane production at 475.6 million tonnes, up from 439.9 million tonnes in last year's first advance estimate. Cotton production is pegged at 29.2 million bales, down from 29.9 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg).

The following table details the first advance estimates for key crops, in million tonnes, for the crop year 2025-26, compared with the first advance estimates for 2024-25 and the final kharif output estimates for 2024-25.
