NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Wednesday approved two multi-tracking railway projects worth INR 27.81 billion across four districts in Maharashtra and Gujarat. This includes doubling of the 141-kilometre railway line from Kanalus to Okha in Gujarat at an estimated cost of INR 14.57 billion and the third and fourth lines between Badlapur and Karjat in Maharashtra for INR 13.24 billion.
The two projects will increase the Indian Railways' network by 224 km and improve connectivity to around 585 villages. The capacity augmentation will result in additional freight traffic of 18 million tonnes per annum, according to a government release.
The doubling of the railway line from Kanalus to Okha is expected to improve connectivity to the Dwarkadhish temple and lead to all-round development of the Saurashtra region. The third and fourth lines between Badlapur and Karjat in Maharashtra are expected to improve connectivity in suburban Mumbai and meet the future demands of passengers, besides providing connectivity to southern India.
The two projects are planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan with a focus on improving multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultations, the release said. End
