MUMBAI – The deep depression over the Strait of Malacca intensified into a cyclonic storm "Senyar" in the early hours Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said. Under the influence of this cyclonic storm, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Thursday and heavy rainfall is expected over the same region on Thursday and Friday, the department said.

The weather department has issued an orange alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for Thursday and Friday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres.

The cyclonic storm is very likely to continue to move west-southwestwards and maintain the intensity till the early hours of Thursday. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve eastwards with gradual weakening during the subsequent 24 hours, the weather department said.

Under the influence of a well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal, and the adjoining areas of south Sri Lanka and the Equatorial Indian Ocean, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu till Monday, with a few spells of extremely heavy showers expected over the weekend, the department said. The weather department has also issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu from Friday to Sunday.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during the weekend, for which it has issued an orange alert, the department said.

Dense fog conditions are likely to prevail during the early morning hours in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday, over Meghalaya on Thursday, and over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Friday and Saturday, the weather bureau said. Cold wave conditions are likely in parts of Punjab on Thursday and Friday, the bureau said.  End
