NEW DELHI – The Asian Development Bank has approved a loan of $398.8 million to improve healthcare and medical education systems in Assam. The loan will be used to modernise several hospitals and medical colleges in the state, including Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the ADB said Wednesday.

"Assam's health system faces critical gaps, with high maternal and infant mortality and severe shortages in tertiary care," ADB's Country Director for India Mio Oka said in a release. "This investment by ADB will modernize tertiary health care facilities, expand access to resilient health systems, and position Assam as an affordable medical destination for the wider region and neighboring countries."

The Assam State Tertiary Health Care Augmentation Project will focus on gender-responsive and socially inclusive healthcare, including building a crisis centre at Gauhati Medical College for survivors of gender-based violence. The project is expected to benefit at least 500 women and girls, the ADB said.  End
