MUMBAI – India's horticulture crop output in 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is pegged at 369.06 million tonnes, up from 354.74 million tonnes in the previous year, according to the third advance estimate released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Tuesday. In its second advanced estimate, the government had pegged the horticulture output at 367.72 million tonnes.

According to the latest estimates, the horticulture crop area is expected to have increased by 400,000 hectares to 29.49 million hectares from 29.09 million hectares last year. Factors such as improved seeds, modern technology, and better market access have led to an increase in the output and area, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

The minister said that the government is introducing new technologies to increase farmers' productivity and income. With advancements in modern tools, high-quality seed production, and improved market infrastructure, India is moving toward becoming a global leader in agriculture.

The total vegetable output in 2024-25 has been pegged at 215.7 million tonnes, up over 4% from the previous year. Onion production for the year is seen at 30.8 million tonnes, compared to 24.3 million tonnes the previous year. Potato production is projected at 58.1 million tonnes, up 2% from a year ago. Tomato output has been pegged at 19.5 million tonnes, down nearly 9% from the previous year.

The government has estimated spices output for the year at 12.5 million tonnes, unchanged from a year ago. Increase is seen in crops such as garlic, ginger, and turmeric, according to the release. As per the third advance estimate, production of aromatic and medicinal plants is expected to have increased to 781,000 tonnes from 726,000 tonnes.

Strong growth is seen especially in the production of fruits and vegetables. The total output of fruits in 2024-25 has been pegged at 118.8 million tonnes, up over 5% from the previous year. Crops contributing significantly to the total fruit production growth include banana, mango, watermelon, jackfruit, mandarin orange, papaya, and grapes.
