MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices closed lower for the third straight session after being volatile amid the expiry of derivatives contracts. Indices were choppy at open, but rose steadily in the last hour of trade, only to fall towards the end. While the Nifty 50 crossed 26000 points at one point, it also broke 25900 points and closed below that level. Investors bought shares of real estate companies, while they sold information technology and media stocks.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25884.80 points, down 74.70 points or 0.3%. The 50-stock fell to a one-week low of 25857.50 points during the session, mainly due to losses in index heavyweights ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. These stocks fell around 1?ch, offsetting the gains in Reliance Industries, another heavyweight. Analysts had said it was important for the Nifty 50 to hold 26000 points and if the 50-stock index remained below this level, the near-term sentiment would turn bearish. The BSE Sensex closed at 84587.01 points, down 313.70 points or 0.4%.
While the headline indices came under selling pressure, broader market indices rose. Mid-cap indices fared better than their small-cap peers, with the Nifty Midcap 50 closing 0.6% higher and the Nifty Smallcap 250 gaining only 0.1%.
Some analysts said investors unwound long positions during the last hour of trade. This means that investors have turned slightly negative towards the market, exiting bullish positions. Analysts said the rupee falling to a record low last week also put pressure on equities. Analysts had also said that the rupee was the worst performing currency this year compared to other emerging market currencies. On Tuesday, the rupee closed at 89.22 a dollar.
Investors sold shares of media and information technology throughout the session. Among media stocks, PVR Inox closed around 3% lower. While the sentiment around technology stocks was largely positive globally due to optimism about the latest AI models by Google's parent Alphabet, Indian IT stocks came under pressure. Hope of a rate cut by the US Federal Reserve at its December meeting gave cues to technology stocks around the world. Shares of LTIMindtree, Infosys, and Oracle Financial Services Software closed 0.7-1.5% lower. However, Coforge and Mphasis ended the session with over 1% gains.
Real estate companies saw the highest gains, with the Nifty Realty emerging as the top gainer among sectoral indices. All the constituents of the Nifty Realty closed higher Tuesday. Anant Raj Ltd., Brigade Enterprises, and The Phoenix Mills closed 3-4% higher.
Among individual stocks, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories closed 1% higher, paring the day's gains after the company and its subsidiaries got the European Commission's marketing authorisation for biosimilar of Prolia and Xgeva. Bharat Electronics ended 1.6% higher after the defence ministry said the company and France's Safran Electronics and Defence had signed a pact to manufacture modular air-to-ground weapons in India.
Max Healthcare Institute's issues with respect to cashless insurance services have been fully resolved and the company's growth will be supported by higher occupancy and better case mix, CNBC-TV18 reported, citing foreign brokerage Citi. The broking firm maintained its 'buy' rating on the stock with a target price of INR 1,460. The stock ended at INR 1,158.10, up 0.2%. JP Morgan hiked the target price of Reliance Industries by 2% to INR 1,727 while maintaining its 'overweight' rating on the stock citing "attractive valuations," NDTV Profit reported. The stock closed slightly higher at INR 1,539.70.
