MUMBAI – Very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu from Friday to Sunday, over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday and Thursday, and over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has issued an orange alert for the same in Tamil Nadu for Friday and Saturday, and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from Wednesday to Friday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres.
The heavy rain comes on the back of a well-marked low pressure area over the Strait of Malacca intensifying into a depression in the early hours of Tuesday, the department said. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further during the next 48 hours, the weather department said.
Very heavy rainfall in parts of south India is also due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Comorin area and adjoining southwest Bengal and Sri Lanka, the department said. This weather system is very likely to move north-northwestwards and become a well-marked low pressure area during the next 24 hours and intensify further into a depression during the subsequent 24 hours.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning with gutsy wind speeds reaching 30–40 kilometres per hour on Saturday, 40–50 kilometres per hour on Tuesday, and 50–60 kilometres per hour from Wednesday to Friday are likely over most of the region, it said.
No major change in minimum temperature is likely over central India for the next two days, after which a gradual fall of 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely, the weather bureau said.
