Earthquake of 5.7 magnitude hits Dhaka; tremors in Kolkata, nearby areas

NEW DELHI - Residents of Kolkata and neighbouring areas across districts felt strong tremors Friday due to an earthquake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, hitting Bangladesh around 1008 IST, the National Center for Seismology said. The quake, with epicentre at Dhaka, was at a depth of 10 kilometres, India's nodal agency for monitoring earthquakes said.
The tremors were felt across Bangladesh and extended to many parts of West Bengal, with several residents stepping out of their homes. Many people across the border took to social media to post their experience during the tremors, although no fatal or devastating impact has been reported yet.
As per reports and social media posts, rescue teams have been deployed in Bangladesh in areas where buildings and construction sites were impacted. End
