MUMBAI – India's food grain output for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at a record 357.73 million tonnes due to record production of rice, and increased groundnut, soybean and moong production, according to the final advance estimates released by the government on Thursday. There was a significant increase in the sowing area in the kharif season, along with an increase in the yield of major kharif crops like paddy, maize, millet, moong, soybean, sugarcane, an official release said.

The Centre has pegged the 2024-25 wheat output at 117.9 million tonnes against 113.3 million tonnes a year ago, according to the release.

The country's rice output this season, as per the final estimates, is pegged at 150.2 million tonnes compared to 137.8 million tonnes the previous year, it said. Maize production is seen at 43.4 million tonnes, against 37.7 million tonnes, according to the data. The production of nutritious or coarse grains is estimated to be 63.9 million tonnes, which is 7.0 million tonnes more than the output in 2023-24.

Tur output is estimated at 3.6 million tonnes compared to 3.4 million tonnes last year while chana output in 2024-25 is pegged at 11.1 million tonnes against 11.0 mln tn last year, and higher than the average gram production from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Chana is the largest variety of pulses grown during the rabi season.

The government has pegged oilseed output at 43.0 million tonnes against 39.7 million tonnes a year ago. The production of soybean is estimated at 15.3 million tonnes compared to 13.1 million tonnes. Groundnut output is pegged at 11.9 million tonnes, up from 10.2 million tonnes the previous year. Production of rapeseed and mustard has been pegged at 12.68 million tonnes this year, it said. The increase in total oilseed output is driven by record groundnut and soybean output, according to the release.

Self-reliance in pulses mission will give strong momentum to increasing pulse production, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. He highlighted the assurance of procurement for tur, urad, chana and moong at the minimum support price, noting that this significant initiative is benefitting large numbers of farmers across the country.

Sugarcane production is pegged at 454.6 million tonnes compared to 453.2 million tonnes and cotton output is seen at 29.7 million bales against 32.5 million bales in the previous year. One cotton bale is equivalent to 170 kilogram.

Jute production is estimated at 8.8 million bales. One bale of jute is 180 kilogram.

These estimates have been primarily prepared on the basis of information received from states. The final estimates cover kharif and rabi season, and the summer season.
