MUMBAI – Water level in 161 key reservoirs of the country fell over 1% from the previous week to 161.820 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is around 89% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 6.5% from a year ago and nearly 21% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.

 

In the northern region, water level in reservoirs fell slightly to 16.804 billion cubic metres, which is around 85% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 59.1% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 17.571 billion cubic metres, nearly 81% of the total live storage capacity and higher than 73.3% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 35.817 billion cubic metres or almost 96% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, against 94.6% last year. Of the 50 reservoirs in the region, 31 were full or at 91-99% of the total live capacity. Nine reservoirs in the western region had water levels below 40% of the storage capacity. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 44.316 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 91.2% of the total live storage capacity, compared to 86.4% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was at 47.311 billion cubic metres, 86% of the total live storage capacity of 45 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was 85.4% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 161 reservoirs in the country, 156 reported more than 80% of normal storage and five reservoirs were at 80% or below of normal storage. Out of these five, none had storage up to 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 2.0 millimetres of rainfall, 71?low the normal of 6.9 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
