NEW DELHI – The output of India's eight core industries was flat on year in October compared with a 3.3% growth a month ago. This is the lowest growth in key core industries in 14 months, data released Thursday by the commerce ministry showed.

The core sector had grown at 3.8% a year ago. On a sequential basis, the index of eight core industries grew 1.2% in October. In the seven months of the current financial year, core sector output grew 2.5%, much lower than 4.3% in the same period a year ago.

Of the eight industries, the output of four – coal, crude oil, natural gas, and electricity – declined year on year in October, while that of four – refinery products, fertilisers, steel, and cement – rose.

The output of coal fell 8.5% on year in October, compared with a 7.8% increase a year ago. Coal sector output had declined 1.2% on year in September. Fertiliser sector output grew 7.4% on year in October, compared with 1.6% a month ago and 0.4% a year ago. Steel sector output rose 6.7% compared with 14.4% in September. Steel sector production grew 5.7% on year in October 2024.

"Excess rainfall impacted mining activity and power demand in October, with the coal output and electricity generation contracting by a sharp 8.5% and 7.6%, respectively, in the month, Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA, said.

"Given the deterioration in the performance of the mining and electricity segments, ICRA expects the IIP growth to ease somewhat to 2.5-3.5% in October 2025 from 4.0% in September 2025," Nayar said.

The eight core industries account for 40.3% of the Index of Industrial Production's weight.
