NEW DELHI – The steel ministry has eased import procedures for steel grades not covered under quality control orders, removing the requirement for importers to obtain a clarification or no objection certificate from the ministry. The decision follows recommendations of a high-level committee on non-financial regulatory reforms and is aimed at improving ease of doing business, the ministry said in a statement Thursday.

 

The ministry said the earlier mandate, which was introduced through a circular dated Oct. 20, 2023, required importers to seek clarification or no objection certificate for any steel grade not covered under a quality control order. This requirement has now been withdrawn. Instead, all non-quality control order steel grades across relevant import codes have been mapped on the steel import monitoring system portal to simplify compliance, the statement said. Importers can now directly generate steel import monitoring system numbers for such grades without approaching the ministry.

 

For steel grades covered under quality control orders, the ministry reiterated that importers must continue to comply with the existing rule requiring sourcing only from manufacturers with valid bureau of Indian standards licences for the relevant grades.  End
