Trade minister Goyal to visit Israel Thu, may review proposed FTA progress

NEW DELHI – Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Israel Thu-Sat for high-level talks to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, technology and investment. Goyal, along with his Israeli counterpart Nir Barkat, minister of economy and industry, are also expected to review the progress on the proposed India–Israel Free Trade Agreement.
"The visit is expected to further reinforce the longstanding partnership between India and Israel, strengthen economic linkages, and create new pathways for collaboration in areas of mutual interest," the commerce ministry said in a release Wednesday.
Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening trade and investment ties, advancing cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, water, defence, emerging technologies, life sciences, infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and exploring opportunities for enhanced collaboration between businesses of both countries, including start-ups, the ministry said.
India and Israel had held the first round of trade agreement negotiations in May, 2010. Eight Rounds have been held since, with the last round being held 12 years back in November, 2013. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India exported goods worth $2.15 billion to Israel, while imported goods worth $1.48 billion.
During his visit, Goyal will also participate in the India–Israel Business Forum, involving leading business associations and industry representatives from both sides. The Forum will include engagements aimed at expanding commercial partnerships, promoting investments, and identifying avenues for joint ventures in priority sectors, the ministry said. "In addition, the fourth edition of the high-level CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) Forum would also be held with prominent CEOs from both sides," it added. End
