MUMBAI – Benchmark indices closed lower Tuesday after a volatile session, snapping six consecutive sessions of gains. The indices recovered briefly mid-way in the session but fell thereafter. Some analysts said the fall was due to negative global cues while others pointed to likely profit sales by investors. Investors sold shares of metal and real estate companies throughout the session. Only nine of the Nifty 50 constituents closed the day higher.
Investor sentiment was bearish across Asia and Europe tracking overnight fall in the US, as investors sold shares of artificial intelligence companies on worries of premium valuations and waning expectations of a rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in its policy meeting in December.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25910.05 points, down 103.40 points or 0.4%. The 50-stock index touched a high of 26029.85 points intraday but could not stay above that level due to selling pressure. The BSE Sensex closed at 84673.02, down 277.93 or 0.3%.
The market was volatile throughout the session. There are expectations in the market that the Nifty 50 index will touch all-time high in the upcoming sessions.
Some market participants expect the Nifty 50 to touch an all-time high in the upcoming sessions but some senior analysts believe this is possible only when there is clear indication of strong growth in December quarter earnings. The index had hit a record high of 26277.35 points in September last year. The index is currently 360 points away from the record high.
All the sectoral indices closed lower, with those pertaining to realty and metal falling the most. Broader market indices underperformed the benchmark indices, falling 0.6-1.1%.
Shares of real estate companies were weak throughout the session. The Nifty Realty index closed nearly 2% lower due to 2-3?ll in Sobha Ltd., DLF, Lodha Developers, Brigade Enterprises, and Oberoi Realty. Information technology stocks were under selling pressure due to a spillover effect from the global market where investors sold IT stocks. Sentiment around the sector has turned negative as investors in the US are worried about the high valuations of artificial intelligence companies. Fading expectations of a rate cut by the US Fed has also affected investor sentiment.
Investors sold shares of metal companies, with bellwethers Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries, and JSW Steel falling 0.4-1.2%. The Nifty Metal index closed 1.1% lower. The fall in stock prices was likely because of rise in base metal prices due to growing uncertainty about US Fed rate cuts, weak Chinese economic data, and a strong dollar index. Others such as Hindustan Copper, Vedanta, and Steel Authority of India fell over 1-2%.
Emmvee Photovoltaic, which made its debut on the bourses, closed 1% higher at INR 219.40 on the National Stock Exchange. The stock listed at INR 217, same as the issue price. More than 36.06 million shares of the company changed hands on NSE. Shares of Physicswallah closed over 42% higher on the NSE. The stock listed at INR 145, a premium of 33% to its issue price of INR 109. About 273.39 million shares of the company were traded at close of the day.
