NEW DELHI – The area sown under rabi crops across India touched 20.8 million hectares as of Nov. 11, up a little over 10% from 18.9 million hectares sown last year, a release from the agriculture ministry Monday showed. The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, was 6.62 million hectares, up 17% from 5.66 million hectares in the corresponding period last year. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.
Acreage under paddy was 744,000 hectares, an increase of 9.1% from 682,000 hectares last year.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, increased 15% on year to 1.55 million hectares. Within this category, jowar acreage rose 7.4% to 882,000 hectares and maize was up over 17% at 426,000 hectares. Ragi also saw a sharp rise of nearly 29% to 49,000 hectares.
The total area sown under all pulses in the country so far in the 2025-26 season was 5.28 million hectares, up 8% on year. Among key pulses, chana acreage rose 10% to 3.74 million hectares while masur increased more than 12% to 683,000 hectares. Acreage under urad fell over 19% to 79,000 hectares, and moong dropped over 44% to 5,000 hectares. Area under other pulses was down a little over 30% to 95,000 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds was 6.62 million hectares, up 5.2% from 6.29 million hectares last year. Groundnut acreage declined over 30% to 79,000 hectares, while mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose 6.1% to 6.42 million hectares. Sunflower acreage increased 50% to 12,000 hectares while linseed declined almost 30% to 67,000 hectares.
