NEW DELHI – India's unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above remained unchanged on month at 5.2% in October with joblessness rise in urban balancing out the fall in rural areas, according to the monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released Monday.
The unemployment rate in urban areas rose to 7% last month from 6.8% in September. For rural areas, it fell to 4.4% in October from 4.6% in September.
The statistics ministry now releases unemployment data on a monthly basis for both rural and urban areas. Previously, the ministry only released quarterly urban unemployment data and annual data for both urban and rural areas.
The labour force participation rate-–the percentage of persons working or seeking or available for work -- rose to a six-month high of 55.4% in October from 55.3% in September for persons aged 15 years and above. The worker population ratio, which is the percentage of employed persons in the population, rose for the fourth month in a row to 52.5% in October from 52.4% a month ago.
The labour force participation rate was higher in rural areas at 57.8% compared with 50.5% in urban areas. The participation rate was sharply higher for men than for women. End
