MUMBAI - The food ministry has forwarded the demand of the flour millers to the commerce ministry to lift the ban on export of wheat products such as atta, sooji, maida, starting with a 1-million-tonne cap, the Hindu Business Line reported. The government banned the export of wheat products in 2022.
Having ample domestic availability of wheat, the Roller Flour Millers' Federation of India requested for permission to export wheat products. It said there was a suggestion by the industry body to initially allow export of 1 million tonnes. "Currently, there is a surplus in the country and the products' outlook is also strong," the millers' association told the newspaper.
Though it is already late as many flour mills have come up in West Asia since 2022 to cater to the demand of 40 million strong Indian diaspora across the world, allowing export of wheat products can help millers generate extra demand from the exporters, the newspaper reported citing industry sources.
India's wheat production in 2024-25 was a record 117.54 million tonnes and the government has set a target of 119 million tonnes of output in 2025-26. The sown area under wheat as of Nov. 7 was 2.27 million hectares against 998,000 hectares a year ago, the newspaper said citing the latest data complied by the agriculture ministry. End
