MUMBAI – Stocks of metal companies are expected to move sideways with a positive bias in the coming week, according to analysts. The Nifty Metal index is likely to find key support around 10445 points while 10725 points may pose immediate resistance, said Amol Athawale, vice-president of technical research at Kotak Securities Ltd.
If the Nifty Metal crosses 10725 points, the index could rise further to 10850 points while a move below 10300 points would make an uptrend difficult, as per Athawale.
Friday, the Nifty Metal ended almost 1% lower at 10494.75 points, after rising in the previous session.
Based on commentary of metal companies after their September quarter results, analysts said operating margins of companies that deal in ferrous metals will likely contract sequentially in the ongoing quarter. This is largely due to flat or lower steel prices and up to $10 uptick in prices of coking coal per tonne, an analyst at a domestic brokerage said. However, volumes for the quarter are expected to be on a par with the September quarter, as per the analyst.
Meanwhile, prices of non-ferrous metals such as zinc and aluminium are expected to be significantly better on a sequential basis, the analyst said. Further, demand for steel is anticipated to rise in the ongoing quarter with infrastructural activity picking up, however, there has been no indication regarding an improvement in prices so far, the analyst added.
"A price uptick should come earlier in long (steel) products than the flat products," the analyst said.
