MUMBAI – Shares of automobile companies will likely be in a range with a positive bias next week, with the September quarter earnings season coming to an end. Almost all the major automobile companies have declared their results and management comments suggest that the December quarter will augur well for the sector in terms of earnings growth and sales. Earlier in the day, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers released October sales data.

"The broader trend (for Nifty Auto) remains sideways to bullish," Mandar Bhojane, senior research analyst at Chola Securities, said. "It's a buy-on-dips market, especially around the 27000–26800 zone," Bhojane said. "A breakout above 27600, which is acting as strong resistance, may trigger fresh bullish momentum. On the higher side, the index can move toward 28000 and 28400," he added.

Friday, the Nifty Auto closed at 27239.80 points, down 0.5%. During the week, the index rose 1.7%. For the week, TVS Motor Co. and Eicher Motors fell the most, while Bharat Forge and Samvardhana Motherson International saw the most gains. This week, Tata Motors, which now houses the commercial vehicles operations after the demerger, was listed at INR 335 against a discovery price of INR 260.75.

Wholesale automobile sales softened in October but still reported modest growth on the back of robust utility vehicle and scooter sales, data from the SIAM showed on Friday. Domestic car makers sold a total of 3.23 million units last month, up 6% on year. In the Indian market, companies sold 2.69 million automobile units to dealerships in October, up 4% on year. This year-on-year growth is a tad weaker than in September, when sales grew 6% on year. These companies exported 541,191 units in October, up 19% on year.

Monday, investors will likely react to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles' September earnings, which include its Jaguar Land Rover and other passenger vehicle businesses. The JLR-maker reported a net loss from continuing operations in the quarter on the back of a one-time expense of over INR 20 billion related to the cyberattack at its JLR operations in the UK. Despite this, an exceptional gain from the demerger of its commercial vehicles business helped the company to report a consolidated net profit during the quarter.
