NEW DELHI – Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance is headed for a landslide victory in the state Assembly elections. According to the trends available with the Election Commission of India till 1830 IST, Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single largest party in the state, closely followed by the alliance partner Janata Dal (United).

According to the latest data, BJP has won 50 seats and is ahead in 41 seats. JD(U) candidates have won 31 seats and the party is ahead in 52 seats. The Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has won five and is ahead in 14 seats. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) is ahead in four seats and has won one.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan has failed to make an impression on voters, which showed in the scorecard. The RJD candidates were ahead in 17 seats, have won eight, and the Congress candidates have won one and are leading in five.

Earlier in the day, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress spokesperson expressed displeasure about the Election Commission and raised concerns over the Nitish Kumar government announcing populist schemes just few days before the announcement of polling dates for the state election. They said the poll panel had failed to provide a level-playing field.

Nitish Kumar appears to be the clear favourite to continue as chief minister in view of NDA's victory.  End
