MUMBAI – Indian equity indices closed higher on Friday, reversing the day's losses in the last 30 minutes of trade. Globally, sentiment was hit by growing hesitation among US federal policymakers about further interest rate cuts and investors selling artificial intelligence and technology stocks amid elevated valuations. Weakness was felt across equity markets in Asia-Pacific and Europe. In India, investors tracked the results of the Bihar elections, which indicated a decisive win for the ruling National Democratic Alliance. Friday marked the fifth straight session in which benchmark indices closed higher.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25910.05 points, up 30.90 points or 0.1%. The index found support around 25750 points and recovered swiftly from the lows. Continuous selling of technology stocks limited the index from further gains. The BSE Sensex closed at 84562.78 points, up 84.11 points or 0.1%. Broader market indices also closed higher on Friday.
In the US, recent comments by several US Federal Reserve policymakers indicate uncertainty about whether the central bank will cut its federal funds target range at the next policy meeting in December, reports said. US Fed officials have raised concerns about inflation and pointed to signs of relative stability in the country's labour market as a signal to pause policy easing, reports said. In addition, Wall Street investors turned bearish on artificial intelligence companies as the high optimism around them has led to premium valuations. This had a spillover effect, providing cues to other equity markets, with technology companies listed in Asian markets also taking a hit amid the negative sentiment.
Investors sold IT stocks in India, likely following the sell-off globally. The selling pressure on these stocks persisted for much of the session. The Nifty IT closed at 36301.25 points, down 1%. Shares of companies such as Infosys, Mphasis, Oracle Financial Services Software, and Tech Mahindra fell over 1-2.5%.
Among Nifty 200 constituents, Muthoot Finance ended the session about 10% higher, making it the top gainer. Shares of the gold financier rose after its net profit for the quarter ended September nearly doubled on year and its revenue from operations rose 56% on year on the back of a surge in gold prices. On the other hand, Premier Energies closed nearly 6% lower, making it the worst-hit Nifty 200 stock.
Ipca Laboratories surged nearly 14% and closed at INR 1,479.60 following upbeat results for the reporting quarter. Its net profit from continuing operations for the September quarter rose nearly 25% on year and revenue grew around 7% on year. The stock was the top gainer among the Nifty 500 index.
Pine Labs closed 13.5% higher at INR 250.89 after listing on the bourses. The stock was listed at INR 242 on the National Stock Exchange against the issue price of INR 221. Nearly 98 million shares of the company changed hands on the bourse during the session.
