MUMBAI – Wholesale automobile sales lost steam in October but still reported modest growth on the back of robust utility vehicle and scooter sales, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed on Friday. Indian carmakers sold a total of 3.23 million automobile units in October, 6% higher on year.
In India, companies sold 2.69 million automobile units to dealerships in October, 4% higher on year. This year-on-year growth is a tad weaker than in September, when companies sold 2.56 million automobiles in India, up 6% on year. Exports in October rose 19% on year to 541,191 units.
Over 80% of the automobiles sold in India are two-wheelers, most of them motorcycles. In October, companies sold 2.21 million two-wheelers to local dealerships, up only 2% on year. This modest growth comes on the back of weakness in motorcycles, sales of which fell 4% on year to 1.34 million units. Scooter sales bucked the trend, rising 14% on year to 824,003 units. In what can be read as a sign of moderating demand, companies reduced production of two-wheelers by nearly 6% on year to 2.28 million units in October.
Exports of two-wheelers surged almost 18% on year to 430,035 units. Unlike in India, exports of motorcycles grew a rapid 19% on year to 381,549 units. Scooter exports were strong as well, with companies shipping 47,226 units abroad, up 9% on year.
"Passenger vehicle, two- and three-wheeler segments posted their highest ever dispatches to dealers in October, primarily buoyed by the festive demand and the recent GST rate reduction, despite being constrained due to certain logistic limitations," SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said. "With the reduced GST rates becoming effective from 22nd September 2025, October witnessed a strong uptick in vehicle registrations, resulting in a notable rise compared to wholesales," Menon added.
Passenger vehicle sales in India rose 16% on year to 399,605 units, while their exports grew almost 12% to 68,738 units. Companies manufactured 403,270 passenger vehicles last month, nearly 10% higher than in the corresponding period last year.
In India, wholesale sales of passenger cars grew a touch over 8% on year to 116,601 units. Local sales of utility vehicles rose 19% on year to 269,467 and their exports were up 17% on year at 33,876 units.
Wholesale sales of three-wheelers was driven by good demand for passenger carriers and moderate growth in demand for goods carriers. Companies sold 81,288 three-wheelers in India in October, up 6% on year. Exports in the segment increased 56% on year to 41,866 units. Companies ramped up production of three-wheelers in October, manufacturing 119,885 units, up almost 16% on year.
APR-OCT
The first seven months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) were rather weak for Indian automobile companies. They sold 15.37 million automobile units in India in Apr-Oct, only a percent more than they did in the corresponding period last year. Exports, however, were encouraging. Companies shipped 3.64 million vehicles abroad, up almost 24% on year. Their production grew 4.4% on year to 18.81 million units.
Two-wheeler sales in these seven months grew only a percent on year to 12.45 million units. Passenger vehicle sales also rose a percent to 2.45 million units. Three-wheeler sales were the outliers, as their wholesale sales rose nearly 6% on year to 475,738 units.
Data for sales of passenger vehicles does not include data from BMW, Mercedes, Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Auto, SIAM said.
