NEW DELHI – The finance ministry will review all ongoing schemes before the 16th Finance Commission cycle commences on Apr. 1, the expenditure department said in a notice dated Oct. 31. The department has asked all the other ministries to furnish the details of all the ongoing schemes that will end or continue beyond Mar. 31.

The 16th Finance Commission cycle will continue for five years starting 2026–27 (Apr-Mar). The finance ministry has sought a yearly break-up of expenditure for the ongoing schemes for those five years. The ministry has also sought a report detailing yearly actual expenditure on schemes that are set to end Mar. 31.

The expenditure department has sought details of the funding ratio for the centrally-sponsored scheme. The department has also asked for interventions planned to meet the sunset clause of the central schemes.

The 16th Finance Commission is expected to submit its report, which will outline the formula for states' share of central taxes and the grants-in-aid for five years starting FY27, by Nov. 30. The commission has already visited all states and Union territories, and a majority of states, including Bharatiya Janata Party-led state governments, have reportedly sought a 50% share in central taxes. Currently, states get a 41% share of the divisible pool of takes, according to the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission.  End
