Water level in key reservoirs marginally down at 163.824 bcm as of Thursday

MUMBAI – Water level in 161 key reservoirs in the country declined marginally from the previous week to 163.824 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is about 90% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. Water level was up 6.3% from a year ago and 20.1% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs fell slightly to 16.949 billion cubic metres, which is 85.5% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 60.8% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 17.727 billion cubic metres, 81.5% of the total live storage capacity and higher than 73.90% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 36.098 billion cubic metres, which is 96.6% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, against 95.9% last year. Of the 50 reservoirs in the region, 34 were full or at 91-99% of the total live capacity. Seven reservoirs had water levels below 40% of the storage capacity. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa. 

 

In the central region, the water level in reservoirs was 44.523 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 91.6% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 87.5% a year ago. The central region includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh. The water level in the southern region was at 48.526 billion cubic metres, 88.3% of the total live storage capacity of 45 reservoirs in the region against 86.8% last year, the data showed. 

 

Of the 161 reservoirs in the country, 156 reported more than 80% of normal storage and five reservoirs were at 80% or below of normal storage. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 1.7 millimetres of rainfall, 78% below the normal of 7.7 millimetres, the India Meteorological Department said.  End
