MUMBAI – Hyderabad-based defence sector company Bharat Dynamics Ltd reported a triple-digit jump in its top line for the September quarter, rising for the fourth quarter in a row. The company's bottom line nearly doubled on year but a huge jump in expenses that rose two-fold from the year-ago quarter limited the growth in the net profit. Both the net profit and revenue, however, comfortably beat analysts' estimates.
The company reported a net profit of INR 2.16 billion for the quarter, up more than 76% on year on year. Analysts had estimated the company's net profit at INR 1.49 billion. Total revenue from operations for the quarter more than doubled on year to INR 11.47 billion, which was higher than the Street's expectations of INR 7 billion. Sequentially, its bottom line jumped 12 times and top line surged nearly five times.
The company's total expenses more than doubled on year to INR 9.80 billion. The cost of raw materials consumed, which accounted for almost 80% of the total expenditure, rose sharply to INR 7.82 billion from INR 2.1 billion in the year-ago quarter. Its employee benefit expense edged higher to 1.62 billion, up more than 14% on year.
The company's unsold inventories were at INR 1.30 billion during the quarter. In the year-ago quarter, the company had sold inventories worth INR 136.95 million. The missile and allied defence equipment manufacturer's revenue from operations increased a shade over 90% on year during Apr-Sept to INR 13.78 billion and its profit for the same period reached INR 2.34 billion, up slightly more than 80% on year. Its total expenses for the same duration rose a little over 78% to INR 12.92 billion.
On Thursday, shares of Bharat Dynamics closed at INR 1,517.90 on the National Stock Exchange, down almost 1%, ahead of the release of its quarterly numbers. End
