NEW DELHI – Thirteen companies have filed applications under the fourth round of the Production Linked Incentive scheme for white goods, committing investment of INR 19.14 billion, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said Thursday. Over 50% of the new applicants are micro, small, and medium enterprises, "reflecting the growing confidence of small and medium enterprises in joining the Air Conditioner and LED components manufacturing value chain."
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade opened the fourth round of the PLI scheme for white goods such as air conditioners on Sept. 15 and closed it on Monday. So far, the PLI scheme for white goods has attracted INR 103.35 billion of committed investment from 80 approved beneficiaries. The scheme is expected to generate production worth INR 1.72 trillion and create around 60,000 direct jobs across the country, the ministry said.
Among the 13 applicants, one is an existing beneficiary under the PLI scheme for white goods and committed additional investment of INR 150 million. "Nine applicants, representing 75 per cent of the total, have applied for manufacturing Air Conditioner components with a cumulative investment of Rs. 1,816 crore (INR 18.16 billion)," the ministry said in a release. "These investments focus on manufacturing copper tubes, aluminium stock, compressors, motors, heat exchangers, control assemblies, and other high-value components." The proposed investments will cover six states across 13 districts and 23 locations.
The Union Cabinet had approved the PLI scheme for white goods in April 2021 with a total outlay of INR 62.38 billion and an aim to establish a complete component ecosystem for air conditioners and LED lights in India. "The Scheme is projected to increase domestic value addition from the current 15–20 per cent to 75–80 per cent, positioning India as a key global manufacturing hub for white goods," the ministry said.
